Executive Producer Dan Ayoub said the temporary culling of four playlists, leaving the game with six, will lower the wait time for matches. However, Industries admits the change “will not solve all matchmaking issues,” and the studio is “investigating” server-side fixes and content updates to address the troubled multiplayer over the coming week. Meanwhile, the Xbox One compilation is due to receive a title update this morning that should fix some of the scoring and stat-based errors. However, matchmaking-wise it’ll only feature a “minor fix” for team skill matching. Not forgetting delayed the dedicated Halo: CE playlist earlier in the week to reconfigure it following player feedback. In a post on Halo Waypoint , Ayoub personally apologized for the situation and reiterated is working around the clock to resolve the multiplayer issues. Since launch, we have done a number of daily server-side tweaks to improve this experience and our data indicates these adjustments have helped considerably, but the state is still far from where it needs to be. Going by the numbers, said, the majority of matches are successfully entered after two to four minutes of waiting. As our Halo: MCC review noted, matchmaking has been problematic since the game launched earlier this week. In the review, which went live on Tuesday, Joystiq’s Richard Mitchell described trying to connect to a match as being “a complete crapshoot.

I’m not downplaying the importance of matchmaking speed, but getting stomped can be really discouraging. It can lead to players dropping out of the game permanently, especially if it happens early in their experience based on data. So to some degree the close matches seem to be working. That said, it may not be optimal for all hoppers and there is always room for improvement.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Receives New Update
We often don’t think about online multiplayer games as having difficulty in the same way that single-player games do and don’t typically hold them to the same standard when it comes to tuning that difficulty. However, I’d argue that we should. An online match where we don’t have the skill to compete can feel just as frustrating as a level of a single-player campaign that’s too punishing.
The difference is, in the solo experience, we can turn the difficulty setting down, and in a local multiplayer match we may even get to be discerning about our opponents, but in matchmade multiplayer games, we’re at the mercy of the matchmaking systems. For this reason, accurate player matching is an essential aspect of online multiplayer games, and matchmaking algorithms should be able to correctly adjust difficulty as well as, if not better than, us.
All the thoughtful map and gameplay design in the world doesn’t matter if we don’t get play where it feels like we could succeed if we tried hard enough.

Originally posted on Bungie. Welcome to the second version of my networking guide. This thread is a revamped version of my previous guide from long ago, and aims to educate users on how Halo 3’s networking and matchmaking work, how to improve the experience, and some of the improvements we can look forward to in Halo: Reach. This guide aims to be accessible to all users, but also to provide additional information for more technical users who are interested in further details. There is some information on how Halo 3’s Campaign networking works, which is fundamentally different to Multiplayer.
Whilst quite a bit of the information here applies in both cases, this post is more focused on Multiplayer networking. Yes, believe it or not, my last thread on the subject was actually referenced by people at Microsoft Research in one of their papers on P2P Matchmaking. You never know who’s reading. Louis Wu has very kindly put up a local copy of this thread, and changed the formatting slightly to make it more easily navigable. So you might want to read it there instead, especially if you are only interested in specific pieces of information.
Thanks very much to Urk for mentioning this in the update! A quick note on suggesting changes to networking.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection runs into matchmaking glitch
It’s a shame that things have become like this, but long gone are the days that a person could simply pop in a game disc, install the game and, maybe, one update, then be on their merry way to spend some time with a brand new game. It’s sad, really. Lengthy download times, large day-one updates, and various launch issues are the norm now, and no matter how much of an inconvenience they may be, it doesn’t appear as though they’re going away.
Such is the case with Halo: The Master Chief Collection , a game that already has its own 15 GB launch day update to go through, on top of the mandatory game installs.
Spartan Ops co-op mode from Halo 4 has been added to The Master Chief Made an update to make sure a match only starts when teams are even could be dropped from matchmaking after disconnecting their controller or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work.
Matchmaking is a multiplayer system, which allows players or teams to be matched with others for the purpose of playing an online multiplayer game via Xbox Live Gold Membership. Matchmaking is a multiplayer system that provides players the ability to enter into a game with less effort. Individuals or teams search for a game, and are matched by the system with other similar players. Once an appropriate number of players is found, the match is made and the game can begin.
In Halo 2 , the matchmaking system was fairly simplistic and very user-friendly, though it does not have any form of custom games search system that is present in Halo: Combat Evolved PC Version. There are two options available in the matchmaking system; the Quickmatch and Optimatch. The Quickmatch option immediately put the player in any available match from the most recent matchmaking playlist the player selected. The player, however, did not have any control over the gametype. Optimatch, on the other hand, allowed the player to search their preferred gametypes from a playlist and enter any available match.
The matchmaking data from Halo 2 would be used to help develop TrueSkill, the skill-based ranking system used in future Halo titles and other video games.
