C atie Munnings is one of British motor sport’s most exciting young talents, a rally driver who flings cars around mountain tracks and winding country roads for a living. So you can only imagine how she felt when she failed her driving test. It was, thankfully, just a minor set-back. Munnings has already crammed more into her working life than people twice her age. Whereas the vast majority of year-olds are only starting to think about what sort of career they would like to pursue, she has been hugely successful in two very different fields.

It was a difficult decision, but her true passion has always been rally driving and, in order to try and break into the world rally championship, and with a sponsorship deal with Red Bull on the table, she could no longer juggle the two commitments. I n the interests of full disclosure, one of Munnings’ biggest fans – my four-year-old son, Felix – is sitting a few feet away while we chat, and even gets his own shot at interviewing her after we have spoken.

Just on the basis of the few minutes she spends with him, working with kids clearly came naturally. H er passion for motor sports is down to her father Chris, who was a rally driver when he was younger and an instructor when she was growing up on the family farm in Kent. My dad set up a motor sport entertainment company – biking, clay pigeon shooting, quad bikes, that sort of stuff. That was always on the family farm where I grew up so when I got back from school I was always jumping on quad bikes and things like that.

You can do that at 14 so we went to the local motor club and I loved it. There was a French rally team, that I drive for now, who said they wanted a female driver.

I made so many great friends, enjoyed my course and loved the city so much that I stayed there for a couple of years afterwards! I used to work with young people as a Teaching Assistant and spent 6 weeks working on voluntary projects in Kenya one summer, which was amazing. I had a chat with Paul McCartney during the Olympics which was pretty cool.
